Dave was the biggest golf enthusiast imaginable. He found true joy competing against the best senior amateur golfers from around the world. As he eased out of his career as a highly regarded and well respected labor and employment lawyer at Pear Sperling Eggan & Daniels, he reveled in a packed tournament schedule throughout the United States and into Europe. but he also loved the classic architecture of his beloved Barton Hills golf course.
Dave had an amazing mind. If you had a trivia question ranging from sports stats to world affairs, from history to music Dave would most likely know the answer. He passionately loved music and amassed an extensive collection jazz, blues, rock, classical, world music and always played it a little too loud. He was never short on stories to tell and, of course, many of them ultimately related to golf.
Born in New York City and raised in Levittown, New York, and later Livingston, New Jersey, Dave left the East Coast to attend Oberlin College. He moved to Ann Arbor in the fall of 1970 to attend law school at the University of Michigan. After a year in Ann Arbor, he met Patricia Devall who became his bride of almost 45 years. For the last 35 years, they loved spending time at their home in the woods of Ann Arbor Township. There they raised their three daughters who remember their dad as an incredibly supportive father always willing to help them edit papers, take them on college trips, talk them through a commute, or chauffeur a 6 a.m. airport run.
He will be deeply missed by Patty; daughters Abby (Scott), Samantha (Omkar), Maggie (Victor); sister Alalia (Fred). His four granddaughters Nora, Etta, Maya, and Neela will also miss their beloved Gramps. He had a wonderful last day before dying suddenly of a heart attack in his favorite chair. We feel his biggest regret would be that he never shot his age though he had come within a shot but, if that's his biggest regret, it shows that he led a full life. There will be a celebration of life held at his home on Sunday, June 18th from 4-8pm. In lieu of flowers, his family feels Dave would appreciate donations made to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
