Thanks to the Society of Seniors, for the first time ever amateur golf’s Super Seniors — players over the age of 65 — will get to compete for a National Championship.
It is with great pleasure, and with a bow to the quality of the over-65 set, that the SOS will host the inaugural National Super Senior Championship at the Forest Creek Club’s North Course in Pinehurst, NC, from Sunday, September 27th, through Wednesday, September 30th. Acclaimed golf-course architect Tom Fazio designed the totally-distinctive North and South Courses at the expansive Forest Creek Club.
Inexplicably, golf’s national governing body, the USGA, has forever failed to show any enthusiasm for creating a championship among Super Seniors. This left a giant opening for the 850-member strong Society of Seniors, founded in 1983 to promote competition among elite senior amateurs, to develop what will be an annual national-championship event for Super Seniors.
To fill what will be a field of 72 Seriously Super Seniors, the SOS identified 19 prominent Super Senior events played over the last 18 months and offered National Super Senior Championship spots to each of the winners plus the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th place finishers. Also invited were the Top 10 players on the SOS’ Player-of-the-Year rankings for Super Seniors, including top-ranked Mark Fried of Solon, Ohio. Also participating will be nine of the top 10 players on Golfweek’s Super-Senior Points List, plus six players from the World Amateur Golf‘s Ranking of the Top 10 Super Seniors, including No. 1 Paul Simson — a multi-time winner of SOS tournaments.
Other notables include past U.S. Amateur and Senior Amateur Champions, past winners of the prestigious British Senior Amateur and many state and regional champions. Indeed, the field for the NSSC will represent the greatest collection of top-ranked Super Seniors ever playing in the same championship.
In creating the National Super-Seniors Championship, the Society of Seniors — the strongest collection of senior amateur golfers in the world — is honoring the mission of its Founding Fathers, gentlemen like Dale Morey, Ralph Bogart and Ed Tutwiler who championed the place of senior golfers in the game’s competitive landscape.
